The Holy Trinity Bowling league has six teams and
meets every Sunday afternoon from the beginning of December to the
beginning of March. Twenty-three students from grades 1-8 meet at
Lincoln Lanes in Latrobe and bowl against each other. There is more fun
than competition and students learn how to bowl and make friends with
teammates of different grades. This is the 5th season for the
Holy Trinity Bowling league.
Girls in grades 4-8 and boys in grades 5-8 make up
the Holy Trinity Volleyball teams. The Diocese of Greensburg has a
Volleyball league that consists of girls junior varsity teams (grades
4-6) girls varsity (7-8) and boys teams (grades 5-8). Students
practice and travel to compete with other teams in the Diocese.
Volleyball season begins in April and ends with the Diocesan Tournament
in May.
A recent addition to the activities at Holy
Trinity School this year is the track club. Students in grades K-8
are eligible to participate in this activity. Parents and students
practice relay races and play other running games. The older students
also practice on two cross-country routes.
The ultimate Frisbee team finished their first
season. This is a group of Holy Trinity students who love to run and
play Frisbee. They have mastered basic skills and really entry Frisbee
football. They have even encouraged the local YMCA to have a Frisbee
clinic and outdoor practice sessions.
The Holy Trinity High Flyers from Holy Trinity
School in Ligonier, Pennsylvania are in their third year as a
demonstration team for the American Heart Association (AHA). Since its
inception, the team has demonstrated at numerous schools across
southwestern Pennsylvania before thousands of students, sparking
interest in the sport of jump rope and teaching the importance of good
nutrition, physical activity and staying tobacco-free. Last year, the
team traveled to the State Capitol in Harrisburg to demonstrate in the
Capitol Rotunda at a press conference highlighting the AHA’s Go Red for
Women campaign. The lieutenant governor, lawmakers and representatives
from the Department of Health all attended the press conference.
Additionally, the Holy Trinity High Flyers have demonstrated at other
venues including Idlewild Park, Sandcastle, and the Children’s Museum in
Pittsburgh. Several members of the team finished last year qualifying
for the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans, LA and three received medals
or ribbons at the international competition. This year, the team looks
forward to another successful competition year in both USA Jump Rope and
AAU Junior Olympic national/ international competition.
There are 16 students on the demonstration team.
In addition to demonstration team practices, Coach Laurie Whitsel
conducts jump rope clinics at Holy Trinity school twice a month for any
student interested in learning jump rope skills. Generally, 40-50
students participate in the clinics. After watching the demonstration
team perform, some schools have started their own jump rope club and
many physical educators have integrated the skills into their physical
education programs.
